Associate – Real EstateThe Belgian office of Linklaters is seeking an entrepreneurial, dynamic lawyer to support the Real Estate practice across a range of initiatives. This position represents a unique opportunity to provide expertise working with talented, engaged, versatile and visionary colleagues and stakeholders in Belgium and abroad.Our Real Estate practice is involved in many of the most significant transactions in Belgium and is proud to handle many aspects thereof (pure real estate but also corporate, financing, projects, etc.) on its own or together with other practices.Having worked in your practice area for a few years, you will now have a proven track record and the confidence of your team. As an Associate you’ll be involved in supervising junior colleagues, setting high standards of work and driving efficiency. As you develop commerciality and deeper capability, you will be trusted to run client matters as well as assisting on larger, complex ones. You will interact frequently with clients, keeping them (and your colleagues) abreast of work progress and managing their cost expectations. An early opportunity to prove that you have what it takes to be a leader in the firm.At this stage of your career your responsibilities will be as follows:Technical Capability
  • Develop deep legal knowledge in real estate and related laws.
  • Analyse and review research for accuracy, relevance and completeness and present arguments concisely and clearly.
  • Consider implication of advice to your client, negotiate with good judgement and anticipate counterarguments.
  • Draft all sorts of real estate agreement (share purchase agreement, asset purchase agreement, lease, long-term lease, right to build; etc.) and supervise the production of less complex documentation.
Client Development
  • Keep abreast of developments in the business world, learn how clients’ businesses work and actively share insights gained from client interactions.
  • Establish positive relationships with the client and build trust.
  • Identify opportunities to deliver additional products and services and use network across practices and offices to deliver the whole firm to your clients.
Work Management
  • Plan work effectively, identifying individuals’ responsibilities, priorities and deadlines.
  • Supervise and monitor matters, setting high standards for quality of work and responding positively to changing demands.
  • Delegate work effectively, demonstrating good judgement when assigning and managing work.
  • Develop knowledge of key efficiency levers, e.g., effective matter management, use of alternative resourcing, and assign resources appropriately.
  • Monitor progress of matter and manage your client’s expectations so there are no surprises.
Working with Others
  • Bring people with diverse skills, interests and viewpoints together.
  • Make yourself available, acting as a sounding board for colleagues, calling out inappropriate behaviour and facilitating flow of communication between team and other parts of the firm.
  • Inspire confidence and respect of others through all interactions.
  • Constantly seek to improve the way we work and drive value to clients and encourage experimentation and innovation.
Knowledge & Learning
  • Identify gaps in the firm’s knowledge and learning, take initiative to develop necessary precedents and share knowledge and learning with others.
  • Develop, facilitate and present technical training.
  • Develop junior colleagues through day-to-day coaching and meaningful feedback and involve colleagues in new opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills.
What do we expect?
  • We are looking for a bright confident lawyer with at least 3 to 4 years’ experience in real estate to join our firm.
  • You have French as your mother tongue or an equivalent command of the French language with an excellent knowledge of English. The mastering of the other national language is a real plus.
  • You have a strong analytical sense, excellent drafting skills, are commercially aware and solution-oriented.
  • You are a team player and have the ability to operate throughout complexity and ambiguity staying focused on best outcomes and client satisfaction.
  • You’re curious and have a point of view, and you’re creative enough to challenge what the future looks like, based in a firm which is always striving to be consistently excellent, admired and at the cutting edge of the global legal market.
  • You have a first-class Belgian law degree, possibly combined with additional education abroad.
