Huawei Technologies Research & Development Belgium NV is a center of excellence for silicon photonics design and processing. Initially called Caliopa, it was created as a spin-off from the University of Gent and Imec in 2010 but was acquired by Huawei in 2013. Huawei is one of the largest telecom solution providers worldwide and uses approximately one sixth of all photonics components produced in the world. In addition to classical telecom scenarios, the breakthrough of AI has led to a surge in demand for components as well as the need for cointegration of electronics and photonics. Furthermore, tomorrow’s solutions need to achieve higher bandwidths per channel to keep up with the growing bandwidth density demand.Huawei aims to address these challenges by investing aggressively in silicon photonics research and development and implementing solutions based on this technology. Huawei R&D Belgium Caliopa team is at the heart of this research and development. The group is located in Gent, a vibrant city in Belgium in the heart of Europe. To strengthen our team, we are now looking for an experienced Photonics Design Engineer to lead the development of high-speed modulators, exploring new concepts and materials.Job responsibilities:
Work as part of a team of photonic design engineers dedicated to develop Huawei’s silicon photonics platform
Introduce new high-speed modulator concepts, including the opto-electronic design as well as the design of the RF lines
Evaluate different modulator topologies, including micro-ring modulators and Mach Zehnder modulators
Introduce new material systems to the existing mass manufacturing platforms to push the performance towards 400G+
Interface with process teams to enhance or replace existing process modules of high-speed modulators
Design and validate photonic components, subsystems and circuits
Define test plans and analyze experimental data in R&D phase
Work closely with component/module teams
Work closely with the test team
